Hi guys,
I am a newbie in linux.
I want to install a Linux OS together with Win XP(Dual boot) in my laptop Dell Latitude D600. The problem is my laptop using an external cd drive, and linux system can not detect it.
I have tried several distro, but still facing the same problems.
What am I suppose to do? or what will be the most suitable distro for my laptop?
Hi guys,

Can you post what exactly is the error message you are getting?
I have a similar laptop/problem, so I think I can articulate the problem (although not the fix - I've tried but haven't had success).
The D400 CDROM connects via USB and the machine will boot from the CD - in my case, the first Slackware CD - but will not recognize the CDROM for installing Slack. I copied the Slack CDs to a Windows partition and installed from there. Even after fully installing Slack, though, I can't use the USB ports. Hotplug locks the machine completely and there are too many things loaded to troubleshoot one at a time. The USB drivers seem to load fine, but nothing shows up in /dev. I finally gave up and just work around it, thinking I'd move to a 2.6.x kernel for grins and start tinkering again.
Knoppix boots from the CDROM and seems to see USB devices OK, but I was never able to find the magic by comparing the two.
I've been using a Dell D400 for some time now with no issues at all. I am currently using Kubuntu 6.06, but have used previous releases of (K)ubuntu without issues. If you're not able to read the CD from the external USB drive, it may be an issue with the CD or the drive itself.
If possible, try swapping out the drive (you should be able to use any D-series CD or DVD-ROM drive--the drive can be swapped out of the enclosure for any other drive.
