Question Problem in insalling Ubuntu NR on Lenovo s12. sugestion for other distro?

Hi, i have tried to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on Lenovo s12 [Intel Atom]: I tried to run a live USB [created with Unbootin], for a test before going ahead with a full install, it went badly wrong, the system got freazed up twice, even without being able to shut down properly. unless something is wrong with the USB Flash Drive itself, perhaps i can conclude that Ubuntu wont do for the Lenovo s12? This is too bad because I'm quite used to Ubuntu on my desktop, but nevertheless I'm willing to try another Linux distro to install on that Lenovo S12 [Intel atom]. does anyone have any suggestions [or even experience] for a distro that would do well on that Lenovo S12?
Thanks for any help.

Did a quick google on the S12, been looking at one of these myself, found some encouraging info,

http://www.linuxtoday.com/news_story...0-005-35-RV-HW

Seems the Moblin mix works well.

This review says the same thing.

http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/reviews/lenovo-ideapad-s12/

I saw some forum comments about Mandriva working out of the box, also.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Thanks very much for the useful information and links. Seems that Moblin could do, i should try it.
How about Easy peasy, i know it is based on Ubuntu, is that means that the fact that Ubuntu NR failed for me on the Lenovo s12, Easy peasy would "follow' and fail too, is there any point in trying that out?
Thanks for any help.

You won't know until you try it. I have never used that distro. Best thing to do is do some googleing, and see if you can find anyone who had experience with it on an S12.

Ubuntu's documentation claims the Lenovo S12 is well supported: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...s#Lenovo%20S12

As you'll see from that link, if your S12 has Nvidia graphics, you'll need to install the driver (it's easy).

A good first step in troubleshooting your problem is to check the install media for errors. Use the "Check CD for errors" option on the first boot screen, or for a more detailed guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

You'll also want to use the Update Manager once Ubuntu is installed, as there have been many bug fixes since 9.10 was released in October.

Hi, thanks a lot for helping. It doesn't seems that i have the Nvidia graphics, i don't really know Windows, what it seems that i have is:
Mobile Intel[R] 945 Express Chipset. as for the check in
- before the installation with the Unbootin I did just that, carefully following the instructions given in the documentation, it was allright.
There still remains the possibility of the problem being the USB flash drive itself, but it never did me any wrong earlier, and before i put the UNR on it, i formatted it.
Thanks for any help.

I had some trouble with Intel 945 graphics on one of my computers. Ubuntu 9.10 would freeze about 10 seconds after logging in. The solution (in my case, no guarantees!) was to disable Compiz desktop effects. The easiest way to do this is to right-click on the desktop, choose Change Wallpaper, and click the final tab. (Sorry I am not on Ubuntu right now so I don't remember the exact wording.) Hope that helps!

Compiz is enabled by default in Ubuntu.

You can also:

Code:
metacity --replace

Yes, in my case, disabling Compiz permanently fixed the freezing problem. I cannot guarantee it will work on your Lenovo S12.

I'm writing this replay from the Ubuntu NR live USB, so far no freeze.
when i entered the change wallpaper, it seems that it was allready on something like no visual effects, for some strange reason i can't get in there again.
I entered in terminal the
Quote:
metacity --replace
and got some message
Quote:
Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a timestamp of 0 for 0x3a00003 (Applicatio)
Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed.
Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a timestamp of 0 for 0x4600003 (ubuntu@ubu)
Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed.
what could that be?
a second Q i have is: how to enable Wifi?
Ubuntu looks great on the Lenovo s12, even on live usb, preforms much faster than the default windos XP.
Thanks for any help

I guess Compiz is not enabled by default on the Netbook Remix, my mistake. Sorry I cannot be of further assistance; that was my only theory. Hopefully another reader will be able to assist you.
