I bought a new laptop - Compaq presario B2800 (B2812TX to be exact) and want to install some kind of linux. I separated 10 GB (all ready partitioned 9 GB with ext3 and 1GB swap) from the 60 GB hard disk.
However, all my trials with various flavors of linux get stuck with the display drivers (adapter is ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600 SE). Instllations get complete but X doesn't load. Only live CDs (Ubuntu, KDE, Lindows, Puppylinux etc) have worked - though I didn't get to the 'sounds' part with any of them.
I have tried the latest Fedora 5 installation and this too turned into a dud.
I did try googling and the best I could see from linux-laptops.com but it's still too geeky for me.
I tried ATI website at (url was deleted as this is my first post) - however I don't understand what exactly I need to download and how to install.
Any help to me in getting the X running on my laptop will be appreciated..
I had a similar problem with an old laptop I had. None of the distros I tried to install detected by Radeon Mobility chip properly. I tried several (Fedora Core, Debian etc...)
Eventually, I tried Mandrake 10 and it autodetected everything perfectly. X started without a hitch. Give it a shot.
