problem connecting to the internet

Hi,

I have installed Vida linux on my eMachines laptop with an AMD64 processor and I cannot connect to the internet. Under Gnome I try to activate eth0 but it deactivates by itself and when I try to reactivate the whole thing crashes. So I entered the rescue mode and it asked if I wanted network functionality and I sayd yes and it loaded something called 'ohci1934' and then I was able to ping my router and just about anywhere. When I try to ping my router under Gnome it says " could not resolve host" or something like that. ifconfig doesnt work under Gnome but it works in the rescue mode. Is there a module I have to load into the kernel in Gnome? I am baffled. please help. Thanks in advance
