powerbook airport Ubuntu 6.06

O.k., this is basic. I've just installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my Powerbook G3 (pismo) and can't get on line. The PB has an airport card which I think is recognized. First, how can I verify that? I want to learn a little about command line so this would be a good way to begin.
Then, if Airport is recognized, do I need to configure anything to connect?
And, is there a symbol in the upper right panel that shows I'm connected? or do I need to put one there?

Then there's dial-up. I thought I found that before but now I can't find it.
Can someone help with all this?
Thanks,
jaybee
