Power Management on Toshiba Sattelite A45-S121

Here's what I'm running:

Toshiba Sattelite A45-S121
Kernel 2.4.22-1.2115
//edit Fedora Core 1

I've noticed that I have access to the APM command but it must not be enabled in the kernel. I've never recompiled a kernel before mostly because this is my first Linux machine that I actually get to play with. Any pointers to reliable guides or just help in general would be great. Or if this isn't going to work at all... you know.

Cheers.

//edit, wow, I would forget the distro.
