Play DVD on CDRW/DVD Combo Drive??
 

Hey all...

I have an HP pavillion ze5200 notebook...
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz (non Pentium-M) (also known as a power sucker! lol)
40 GB hard drive
CDRW/DVD combo drive
blah blah blah..

Running Fedora Core 1 fully updated...

I've had Fedora on here for a couple months... since I bought the Red Hat Linux Bible for Redora and Enterprise (as I also use RHEL WS)....

My question is that, the other night i was going to watch a DVD... and then realized... Red Hat doesn't come with a DVD or Digital Video player... no biggy... used APT to suck down both XINE and MPLAYER...

Neither Xone nor Mplayer will play the dvd... I haven't done anything to the fstab regarding the dvd... not quite sure how to as it is a combo drive... a step-by-step explaination of how to get this to work would be great...

the error i get when I try to click DVD in xine is..

Error 1: "The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: not disc in drive). (/dev/dvd)"
{These are retail DVD's including Office Space, BLOW, Jackie Brown, etc.}

Error 2: " - xine engine error -
There is no input plugin available to handle 'dvd:/.
Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist."

Xine looks for dvd's in /dev/dvd as default, do you have this device?

Originally my own dvd-rom was listed as /dev/cdrom1. You can change the device where xine looks for dvd's in xine's options/setup.

You don't need to change anything in FSTAB for the dvd player.

Non-windows players cannot access DVDs unless they have right means of decoding them. Did you download the codecs when you installed Xine and MPlayer? I use both and had to download Win32 codecs and libdvdcss files - look for them on Packman or Cambuca.

I didn't manually download the codecs though i used apt, and it downloaded several dependencies, so I assume that it did but I will check when I get home.. I don't know what the device is listed under because it is a CDRW/DVD combo drive so I didn't know if it was listed as 2 seperate drives or what...

I have a Win32 folder, libdvdcss.so.2 and libdvdcss.so.2.0.7 files in /usr/lib/. I downloaded win32codec-0.52-1.i386.rpm and libdvdcss-1.2.8-.network.i386.rpm from the Cambuca website. My Xine and MPlayer work perfectly.

cdrw/dvd will be listed as 1 device. Mines listed as dev/hdc in FSTAB.

this is all great.. but none of it's working... my device won't show up as anythong other than /dev/cdrom but that won't play dvds

I get the exact same errors that you do, I have not tried this my-self, but from info I got on this forum, I downloaded, xine-lib-0.9.13.tar.gz, xine-ui-0.9.13.tar.gz, xine-dvdnar-0.9.13.tar.gz, and libdvdcss-1.2.1.tar.gz.
it is important to install the files in their proper order. see the readme.

these files are for debian 2.4.22, and gcc 3.3, as well as my 686 system, the files are different depending on your system.

the info says that the dvd needs to be told to decode dvd's with this specific software, because of copyright laws or the lack of proper laws.

I searched far and wide for it and searching for "libdvdcss" produced the best informational result.

When have more beard growing time I will attempt to install, and post my results.

hey guys.. thanks for all the help.... i got it to work... I'm not sure exactly what it was... but i changed the xine options to look under /dev/cdrom and a couple other things... and now it works... sorry i don't know exactly what made it work... but it works just the same... thanks again for all the advice...

had the same trouble, what made the fix was changing the /dev/dvd to /dev/cdrom....

hi folks. i had to jump in on this one since i'm having the same problem with xine. i am seeing the exact same error message concerning permissions. i tried to change the /dev/dvd to /dev/cdrom and that didn't work. i don't think it's a codec problem though. it simply looks like a file permission issue. i say this because i can see that it recognizes the title of the dvd i placed in the drive (so it's obviously mounted [gotta love 2.6 kernel and superdrive!]) as with several of those who have offered info in this thread, i have a dvd/cd writer. it is listed as /dev/dvd though (so the earlier suggested fix of /mnt/cdrom didnt work). here's the error:

as i said though, it does read the title so it is properly mounted. i am using mandrake 10 and i used urpmi to install xine to begin with. i would appreciate and thoughts on this. once again, thanks in advance.

well, I was having problems until I read this post. I changed the location of my dvd drive to /dev/cdrom, like someone said above that xine defaults to /dev/dvd.

I did download a couple libraries previously...I think they were libdvdcss, and libdvdread. I also installed the xine-dvdnav package. I don't know if any of those made a difference. you can find them on www.rpmfind.net and I don't know if they are on yum.

Well, now I can watch dvds.

I had the same problem. I corrected both problems by downloading the following packages,

W32Codec and Libdvdcss

I was looking for the quick fix, so I downloaded the RPM's from rpm.pbone.net

I hope this helps you as well.
