Philips Freevents X-52 - trying to install SuSE
 

Hi there.

My wife recently bought a dinky little laptop, a Philips Freevents X-52. You can have a look at it here: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...866&tabIndex=1

As we use SuSE on the main machine in the house, I thought we would try to install it on this one. My wife prefers using Lyx and Pybliographic for academic writing, rather than plodding along in MS Word.

I'm fairly experienced with installing SuSE on desktop machines, but laptops are a bit of a new breed. When I boot up with the SuSE 10.1 DVD, I get the usual menu, select Installation, then I get the rotating circle splash screen. Which then hangs. I pressed ESC, and after initialising the USB and Firewire devices, I get "Searching for info file...", and the whole system just hangs there. I get the same result with safe settings.

I also tried Ubuntu 6.06, which got as far as searching for the network before hanging. A SuSE 10.1 Live DVD showed up that the CD-ROM and wireless card have the same IRQ address (177) (Can't remember the exact messages).

I have tried adding pci=noirq to the boot commands, which gets me past the "Searching for info file..." part. Now it hangs at "Configuring eth0 via DHCP..." or something similar (sorry - the machine is away with my wife at the moment so I can't check the exact messages).

Any suggestions? Do I need to do pci=irqmask, and if so any ideas for pci=irqmask=what? Is there any way I can get it not to try looking up DHCP?

Any help is really very welcome!

i would try w/ the no acpi option on install (especially new, new laptops). if it installs, then you can add/work out acpi later.

let us know how far that works.

funny enough, i've only installed (Suse) on laptops. never had a desktop.
