PCMCIA problem, please help

Hi!

I installed Suse 9.1 Personal Edition on my laptop, and I was pretty happy with it, even it didn't have gcc. But then I got a problem becouse my network didn't seem to work correctly, sometimes it just freezed and disconnected from internet. So, I thought that I could fix this problem (and get gcc) by installing newest Suse 9.1 via ftp. Now, the main problem is that everytime I try to connect to internet this damn thing freezes and install stops after a while. I have tried many different ftp sources, and everytime it freezes. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds, sometimes 10 minutes. I have run Windows 98, and with it network card worked perfectly so it is not a hardware problem.

Here's my computer specs:
Toshiba Tecra 8000
PII 350mhz, 128mb
Ethernet 3c589c PCMCIA card

I tried to switch PC Card Controller Mode to "PCIC compatible" in BIOS, but it didn't work, so I switched back to "Auto-Selected" (third option was CardBus, I haven't tried it).

So what would you recommend? I'd like to stick in Suse becouse it seemed perfect for newbie like me. ;)
