pcmcia->insert twice to activate then remove to freeze

ok so heres the deal running mdk 9.1 and just got a belkin f5d2060 wifi card. the first time i slip it in after booting...nothing. i pull it out. i put it in again and it comes to life and wireless activity works great and life is good. then im done and i pull it out and the system completly freezes, must do hard shutoff. this is how it goes each time unless i do /etc/init.d/pcmcia stop before i pull it out. i shouldnt have to do this shold i? i havent found anything usefull in the logs. what does having to put it in twice to make it work indicate? i think ive read someone else here doing that before but i cant find the thread.
thankyou.

you should be able to safely disable the card for ejection with the command (as root)
cardctl eject

Check
man cardctl
for more details. There's also cardmgr that might be interesting.

thanks for the reply. that seems to work about as well as stop pcmcia except i can reinsert a card without doing a pcmcia start. so is this it then? whenever i need to remove a card i must su to root and eject it? or am i not understanding something?

see if you can use
/sbi/cardctl eject
as a normal user (/sbin is usually not in the PATH of a normal user so you have to specify the path to cardctl if you want to run it as a normal user). If this works, you could place an icon on your desktop which calls a script (and/or have a menu entry for this little script). The script would be

#!/bin/bash
/sbin/cardctl eject

Hi,
This article is of interest for me for the minor issue.

The problem of reinserting the pcmcia card for linux to recognize it.

I have Fedra Core 1 in a Compaq nx9010.
My problem is exactly the part of having to reinsert the pcmcia card (or if not inserted on boot, I have to "insert twice").

This causes a problem of all the network services (ntp, smb, .... ) not to start normally.

Does anyone know what is the problem (had the same issue with RH9)

Thank
Joao Mendes

Well my problem is a little different, Compaq nx9010, with dual boot to Suse 9.0 / XP pro. I'm using a Belkin 54g F507010xx wireless card.

Well, Suse Linux doesn't even recognise the card being inserted!

I am a nice fresh newbie who knows "Jack Sh*t" about Linux, but learning as I go, but this one has got me flummoxed.

Hotplug is enabled
PCMCIA is enabled

so, I'm a bit confused now.

Any/all help appreciated.

Rob

Hey, Brain Drop,

Thanx for that, I found that thread a couple of minutes after I posted this one, it surely seems to cover the same problem that I have.

All -

One of the posters on that thread seems to be at the same state of "newbie-ness" (to Linux) as I am and he asked for detailed instructions on how to install the ndiswrapper, after reading thru the replies, it seems that no-one has replied to his request.

So I guess we're stuck and will have to do a lot more "homework" on using things like rpm and checking/editing configuration files (of which there are zillions and none of them seem to have any logical names either!)

Now I'm not a complete novice, I write C/C++ programs for Palm OS devices using a windows platform for my development work. I've never had formal training for windows, but can get most things done including dual-boot operating systems, and reasonably complicated SDK installations.

But this Linux is NOT very intuitive!

Anyway, if someone has an easy to follow summary on using rpm to install the ndiswrapper and then to install the windows driver, I'd be very happy, however I suspect I"ll have to spend the next few days beating my head against the wall
