All year I have been trying various linux distros on my Averatec 3200. None would work.
Yesterday I tried PCLinuxOS .92 (test 3). It installed without a hitch. So far, everything works fine. I've yet to try wireless but it does search for a signal so I suspect all will be well. Will know in a few days when I go travelling again.
Congrats on your success. I'm going to be joining you as a mobile Linux user. I'm shopping for a notebook now. Just so many options to choose from. Good luck with the wireless.
I've never used PCLinux, is it available in a live version?
found this thread while searching for ideas for what might work best on my averatec 3280, and I downloaded the latest PCLinuxOS live cd to try it out. I currently have Mandrake 10.1 installed on the laptop, but the wireless doesn't work, among a few other things, so after reading this thread I decided to try this one.
I'm trying to boot off the live cd first to see if it works before I install it. upon booting up, I load the wlassistant to connect to my wireless network. at that time it shows my router and quite a few others that are in other apartments. I select my router and enter the WEP key and it tries to connect, but fails after 20 seconds or so.
then, it doesn't show any routers anymore, and I can't get them to show up again unless I reboot the machine.
so I'm wondering, is the wireless working on your Averatec with this distro? if so, did you have to do anything special to get it to work? or have you since moved to another distro on the Averatec?
hey all,
with most of the Averatec laptops, you have to disable the acpi in the initial install or else its just awful amount of cd read errors and failures on installing packages. just do the failsafe install.
once you have the distro installed, go back and re-enable acpi in the boot loader. otherwise you won't have access to usb and power throttling.
i personally installed Suse 9.3 last summer, and EVERYTHING works flawlessly. the RT2500 ralink wifi is perfect. dvd burning. cpu and fan throttling.
