Well... I just bought a T420 with an i7-2640m inside for the price of 265€.

It's one of those models that also features an additional nVidia chip and it has a DVD-RW drive (something that comes in handy indeed when trying to install distros).
Oh and it comes with one of those cool docking stations!

On the downside the SSD that comes with it only has 120G available and the laptop itself also just comes with 4G of RAM.
But since I also have that T400 in front of me here, I could always switch those parts, so I get the overall better T420 eventually.

Hopefully the screen won't go mad at me this time, the seller wrote its in very good condition as it was used by a bank.

Congrats on the "new" laptop. I had an HP Elitebook 8460P that had the same processor, and it's a nice one. If it's got 4 GB x 1 DIMMS, I'd suggest just grabbing another 4 GB DIMM. While 4 gB will perform just fine, there are SOME times that 8 GB will allow for slightly better performance. After 8 GB, unless you run memory intensive applications, you won't see further performance improvements in modern hardware.
