I have a Latitude D800 with a 40GB hard drive. I removed the utility partition becuase I felt that I didn't need it and that I would always have the Dell CD with me, in case I did need it. I dual boot GNU/Linux and XP (although I haven't been in XP for a few days...) Anyway, here's my partition table:
Code:
Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40007761920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4864 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 380 3052318+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 381 4864 36017730 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda5 381 1523 9181116 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 1524 1588 522081 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda7 1589 4864 26314438+ b W95 FAT32
Here are my partitions in GB:
NTFS - 2.9
ext3 - 8.5
swap - 0.5
vfat - 25.1
The NTFS holds everything for windows except Program Files and Documents and Settings, which are located on the vfat partition.
Here's what I did to get from XP only to XP + Linux:
1. Backup important stuff from windows.
2. Restart computer with XP install disk and make partitions
3. Install XP on hda1
4. Using Junction Link Magic, I pointed C:\Program Files to G:\Program Files and C:\Documents and Settings to G:\Documents and Settings. This way I can read and write to these locations under both OS's.
5. Install GNU/Linux.
Originally I installed LILO (I notice you'll be using grub) on the root partition (hda5). Later I decided to go ahead and put LILO on the MBR.
