Options for a linux cell phone?

My current cell has moved on to greener pastures and I figure that this is as good an opportunity as any to begin my foray into embedded linux. So, what cell phones are out on the market that would be best for a relative linux newbie to tinker and learn on? I'm not looking for a whole lot of bells and whistles, just something simple (bonus if it works with Verizon). I haven't been keeping up with the progress on linux phones, are people using them?

Don't know how much you're willing to spend or what your timeframe is, but the OpenMoko should be out by Christmas, and I think Verizon is a GSM network. Give it a little time, and OpenMoko looks to be an iPhone killer.

This was an unexpected breakage so for right now I just need something cheap that works as a phone, probably won't have time to put any serious effort into tinkering with it for a few months but I would like to have the option available to me when the time comes.

Another option I am considering is just buying a cheap temporary phone for the next couple months (thinking an old nokia brick or something similar) and then investing in a shiny new toy come January
