OpenSUSE 11 on Toshiba A215 S7422 WIFI issue
Hi,
Please help me. :( I am very very new to Linux. I have Toshiba A215 S7422 initially having Vista as the OS but I changed it to Windows XP2. After that I installed OpenSUSE 11 on the laptop. But I have a problem with the wifi recongnition. I actually have Realtek RTL8101E installed on my laptop and its working fine with Windows. IS there any way I could fix this problem? Please help me Thanks in Advance :) |
Is the module for that card loaded? What's the output of lsmod, lspci, and iwconfig?
|
Sorry to say but I am a complete fresher to all these things and I m learning things now..
So could you please tell me what exactly "Is the module for that card loaded" mean? I am so sorry if I am asking on a wrong thread.. please help me out :( |
I have an a215 with the rtl8101 and I needed to compile my own module from a modified driver I found to get it to work please post the output of:

Ok this is what I did, it should work for you.
First you will need the source for your kernel installed and a working compiler. I'm not on Suse so that part will be different for you. you can probably get your kernel source (for the kernel you are running) installed through yast. Then go to this site: http://www.datanorth.net/~cuervo/rtl8187b/ and download this file: rtl8187b-modified-jadams-2-1-2008.tar.gz Follow the instructions inside. This is a patched version of the driver that works with the vendor/product string in our usb devices. this will compile a module for your wifi card and comes with handy scripts to bring it up or down. this is working for me on 2.6.26 and is supposed to work on 2.6.24 so you should be fine with 2.6.25. |

Can I download the kernel from http://www.kernel.org/ (2.6.26.5 Latest Stable Version) As I already mentioned earlier I am taking classes on linux now.. Could you please tel me if I just just download the file from the site and follows the instructions given in http://www.suseblog.com/?cat=36 Thanks a lot for the help.. Sorry if I am troubling :( |
those instructions describe getting the source from kernel.org and then compiling it. this will get you set up to install the driver.

I never worked on Linux earlier but I am very much eager to learn new and complicated things, but I need to be told in the beginners way as I am working everything on my own.. for the first time..:) |

Its installing properly without any errors. But its not allowing me to do the following things: * ./makedrv (will compile with many warnings) * ./wlan0up * ifconfig/iwconfig/ifup/whatever as usual. Its showing me as "command not found". So what do I have to do now?? |
