not starting X display manager

After much wrestling with a new install of Debain I finally got it to boot partially, but it gets to a message
"not starting X display manager (xdm) ....

pc is HP pavilion ze5200 which has a ati 345m card which I think has some issues.....?

any suggestions how to fix this?

I can't even boot it to get to fix it so any suggestions on that most welcome too.

Thanks a bunch

Jim

In the bootloader, add "3" to the end of the kernel options. This should skip trying to start X. I think. I don't know Debian. Anyway, then try starting X manually ("startx"). If it doesnt start, post the errors here.
