This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Have old compaq presario here too 1200 series also, found kubuntu, slackware, debian (no genome), gentoo (no genome) work great. Kubuntu uses a lighter windows manager then ubuntu. DSL and Puppy worked but had to download in install lots of drivers not supported by default.
Kubuntu with XFCE desktop would prolly be the best. The cd-rom will mount in puppy, don't remember what I did to get it to work. Ended up putting slackware on mine and everything works pretty well with default settings.
You only need the first two cd's to install slackware. Also check out the slackbook for best installation package options ( unless you want the full 3 gig install) Wouldn't bother with installing KDE on that machine on mine its descent but slow even with 196 megs ram (processor just doesn't have the umf lol), xfce is not difficult to use.
For the pcmcia card just check and see if its linux compatible.
Depending, slackware full install is 3+gig, i customize it down to 6-700 megs, 1 gig tops. You get looooots of options from the beginning, everything from a base linux install to a basic network server.
Debian will install (not easily on my laptop), about the same size, and you could build it with just what you want.
Wolvix was a trimmed down version built from slax, it works pretty well but you need network to install it to the hard drive. might be more the size you are looking for by default though.
i configured that dev/hdc, but still it doesn't play the cd files automaticcaly, so i noticed that the files/cd needs to be mounted , and then i can acces the files dev/mnt/hdc, but i don't know if that's causing the problem
xmms (see below)
i tried Gxine , "autoplay input plugin 'CD' failed"
XfreeCD CD songplayer , doesn't configure i guess
when i try to play a song in xmms it says :
pls check if soundcard is configured properly
you have the correct output plugin selected
No program is blocking the soundcard
any suggestions Hern_28
