try ubuntu(http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu). it is designed especially for beginners.

If you need any assistance search for a LUG (linux users group) in your city. They might help you.

You can install feather to the hard drive. According to the feather forums:
/home/knoppix/feather-hdintall
or right click with mouse to bring
the menu, in enhancements you will
find an entry:

install to hd

Presario 1247

Have old compaq presario here too 1200 series also, found kubuntu, slackware, debian (no genome), gentoo (no genome) work great. Kubuntu uses a lighter windows manager then ubuntu. DSL and Puppy worked but had to download in install lots of drivers not supported by default.

Kubuntu with XFCE desktop would prolly be the best. The cd-rom will mount in puppy, don't remember what I did to get it to work. Ended up putting slackware on mine and everything works pretty well with default settings.

First 2 cd's

You only need the first two cd's to install slackware. Also check out the slackbook for best installation package options ( unless you want the full 3 gig install) Wouldn't bother with installing KDE on that machine on mine its descent but slow even with 196 megs ram (processor just doesn't have the umf lol), xfce is not difficult to use.

For the pcmcia card just check and see if its linux compatible.

True.

Depending, slackware full install is 3+gig, i customize it down to 6-700 megs, 1 gig tops. You get looooots of options from the beginning, everything from a base linux install to a basic network server.

Debian will install (not easily on my laptop), about the same size, and you could build it with just what you want.

Wolvix was a trimmed down version built from slax, it works pretty well but you need network to install it to the hard drive. might be more the size you are looking for by default though.

What software are you playing cd-roms with?

Might need to check the configuration of the player to make sure that its calling the cdrom, i had to set mine to /dev/hdd(hdc) instead of /dev/cdrom that was set by default.

Which distro did you end up installing, if its using KDE might try xfce.

puppy ,

i configured that dev/hdc, but still it doesn't play the cd files automaticcaly, so i noticed that the files/cd needs to be mounted , and then i can acces the files dev/mnt/hdc, but i don't know if that's causing the problem

tried with:
xmms (see below)
i tried Gxine , "autoplay input plugin 'CD' failed"
XfreeCD CD songplayer , doesn't configure i guess

when i try to play a song in xmms it says :
pls check if soundcard is configured properly
you have the correct output plugin selected
No program is blocking the soundcard

any suggestions Hern_28

(fan is not working , heating up on this sunny isle)

Automatically.

Are you wanting puppy to play cd's automatically when they are inserted?

Edit and do you have system sounds?
