No soundmixing

Ok so here I am again with my Dell Latitude D600. I've been trying to get soundmixing to work but I could not archieve that goal...
My soundcard is a AC'97 soundcard, and under Windows I can have several applications accessing the soundcard at once, but under Linux there is absolutely no way to, say, let amaroK play and start up mplayer...
Is there a way I can enable soundmixing???

Are you using KDE? Then

Look in KDE control center something called ARTSD. Enable it.
Next you have to enable all your applications thru' artsd. like type:
# artsdsp gmplayer

Any new application you should launch only like:
artsdsp realplay
artsdsp amarok

Read arts help in KDE...

In gnome there is something called esd (I think)...

I tried what you said with amarok: I executed 'artsdsp amarok' on the shell, but first thing I got was an error that the soundserver crashed, now everytime I try to start amarok (with or without artsdsp) it just tells me that the files in the playlist cannot be found, and when looking on the shell it says
Quote:
unix_connect: can't connect to server (unix:/tmp/ksocket-cxd/nex.maximilianeum.ch-72c6-432751e1)
Any idea how to fix this?

if you try alsaconf, as root, and it says command not found, it means you need to install alsa sound drivers, get to know if this alsa drivers will work with your sound system...

try to find out how to install alsa driver...

alsaconf works fine for me, it configures the soundcard right, and I'm actually able to play sounds, but there simply is no soundmixing...
Anyway I compiled amarok from source and turned debugging on, and here's the output.
Any idea on how to fix it? I do also get some weird errors such as "Could not read /Wav."
