No sound, pulseaudio & cairo dock

I'm running Debian Sid with XFCE on an Asus eee-pc 900. It has been running fine for several years, but I recently installed Cairo Dock, which I think pulled in Pulseaudio, and now I get no sound. Pulseaudio thinks it's working, and indicates that sound should be working, but all I get is silence. Asking apt-get to uninstall pulseaudio gives a notice that cairo dock and everything associated with it will be removed, so I've hesitated to do that. Everything I've tried indicates that sound should be working, but it's not. I get the same when running Gnome. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello:
Did you check your card address?
If there is an address mismatch it will be sending data to the sky...
Regards.

It's connected to the default source & sink, but that may not be correct. I've never completely understood pulseaudio, although I've read a lot about it. I'll keep looking.
