No sound on Toshiba NB100, Ubuntu 8.04

When I try to open my volume control I get this:

No volume control Gstreamer devices and/or plugins found

I am pretty new to Linux, have no idea what this means. Help please!

Means it did not detect your soundcard. Why not try out the current release of Ubuntu 9.10
