no sound on mdk 10 laptop

I've just installed mdk 10 on an acer laptop and although the soundcard is probed correctly and everything seems configured OK as far as I can tell (I'm no expert) I have no sound at all - any suggestions?

I just installed MDK 10.0 on my laptop and am also having problems with the sound. I found out that sound does play through the head phones on my computer, but not on the built in speakers. I'm still looking for a solution.

I have the same problem on a dell inspiron 5100. External speakers or headphones work fine, but the built in speakers don't. They worked fine on XP before I switched..so I know they still work..it's just a question of how to make them work. It would be nice if they did, since the whole idea of a laptop is portability, and it isn't too portable if I'm lugging speakers around. :-/

i have an Acer laptop also (travelmate 250) with an i810 on board sound. The problem also occured in mdk 10CE (no problem with the 9.x version), no sound from the built in speaker. But i tried to fix this problem by editing the /etc/modules.conf file.

look for a line like this:

Code:
alias sound-slot-0 snd-xxxxx
replace the snd-xxx (ALSA driver for your soundcard) with OSS driver. In my case, i replaced it with i810_audio, so it would be read:

Code:
alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio
hope that helps

For some reason KDE on mandrake turns off sound by default.

I have no idea why this is the case.

Try

amixer sset "External Amplifier Power Down" toggle

or from KDE you can also use KMix, go to Advanced and activate "External Amplifier". To make KDE remember this between sessions: Control Center -> Mixer : Save Current Volumes (and make sure "Load volumes on login" is checked).

Hope it works for your guys.

Same here. I don't know why I didn't think about that before. *shakes head*
