Gateway MX6453 laptop, Turion64 x2, 2GB RAM. This machine screamed when it had Windows on it. But I would have been screaming had I been forced to use it, so...
I installed SUSE 10.1, but it failed after the initial reboot. The soundcard was detected as an "ATI Technologies" and the system was using snd_hda_intel for the driver. During the boot, this puked bigtime, resulting in a coredump. It happened so fast, however, that I couldn't get any meaningful data from the two fresh installs I did. At the suggestion of a colleague, I installed Ubuntu 6.06, and have a mostly-functional machine at the moment.
No sound, however. Ubuntu (which has alsa-1.0.10 on it after the latest round of updates) is still calling the card an "ATI" and tries to load snd_hda_intel. At least this time it isn't puking. After some pursuit, I found some references to similar problems in this forum (most notably in thread id 473423; I can't post links yet) and decided to post here for some assistance.
Disturbingly, the results of “lspci -s 0:1b -vn” were: nothing. The device manager on Ubuntu allows me to see what should be the card, but it's just coming up as:

Any suggestions? I was preparing to install alsa 1.0.13 to see if it helps.
If the lsmod says somthing like
snd 8 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_ oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
then you have sound installed, so check alsamixer or kmix switch and turn off external amplifier.
and in kde go to control center > sound system - enable

**then you have sound installed, so check alsamixer or kmix switch and turn off external amplifier.**
Turning off external amplifier shuts off the sound on my computer. I don't suggest that.
**and in kde**
Ubuntu has Gnome. Not KDE.
**go to control center > sound system - enable**
This works if arts doesn't cause trouble with the sound card. Which, sometimes, it does.
I suggest login out of Gnome, press CTRL+ALT+F1, login,
type "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp"
Press CTRL+C
If you heard something, it's working fine, if not, play with the soundknob and alsamixer
If you get an error while trying that command, well, come back here and post lspci -v...
