no sound on Acer Aspire with mepis

I put Mepis on my Acer Aspire 5100 a few days ago and when I tried to get sound. I either had nothing, or a really nasty noise coming out of my speakers. I'm assuming that this is a driver issue. I'm a definite rookie to linux, but know my way around windows and Mac somewhat. I've looked for drivers or other users with the same problem but no luck. I'd appreciate any and all help- even a reference to where I can find help would be fine. Thanks.
