No Sound card with Gateway Laptop and Mandrake 10.1 Official

Hello,

I installed Mandrake 10.1 official on my Gateway M320 Laptop, but I am not getting any sound.

The outputs for /etc/modules shows only 2 modules loaded, which means sound module is not loaded.

%s Cat /etc/modules
slamr
nvram

The hardware support, however shows the following sound card and says configured.

I tried all possible things with alsa, and made sure that nothing is muted. Everything is "on" but no sound.

The hardware specifications that Linux detects is as follows:

Identification
Vendor: Intel Corp.

Description: ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller

Media class: MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

Connection
Bus: PCI

Bus PCI #: 0

PCI device #: 31

PCI function #: 5

Vendor ID: 32902

Device ID: 9413

Sub vendor ID: 5663

Sub device ID: 8250

Driver
Module: snd-intel8x0

Alternative drivers: ali5455, i810_audio, nvaudio

I am not very experienced in Linux and do not know how to load modules manually, or figure out which module is to be loaded. Please help.

Thanks,
Vaddadi

Set external audio to "mute" or "off" in your mixer applet. This should do it for you, as it worked on my M4525 (the retail version of your notebook).

Thank you Eric

Thankyou very much Eric. It worked almost like a miracle.

What kernel are you running? I have that same laptop and for the life of me can not get the sound working in the 2.6.11 kernel

I am running 2.6.10, so yours should work fine. The only other problem that you might run into is the fact that snd-intel8x0m, which is a modem driver tends to start first unless you blacklist the modem driver in /etc/hotplug/blacklist and have load it in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules

uname -r gives the following output: 2.6.8.1-12mdk. (The distribution is Mandrake 10.1 Official)

Yeah, I blacklisted the the modem driver, muted everything that I was supposed to. I've tried everything. All the mixers work. The only thing I can't do is change the volume in gnome. It says no devices present, even though xmms happily plays along my mp3, just with no sound.
