No sound and XGA resolution instead of SXGA

I have just bought a DELL Latitude D600. Upong installing Mandrake 9.2 on it, I have encountered some problems:

a) Sound: A soundcard is detected (?ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller). When I plug in some headphones, there is sound. However, nothing is coming from the speakers. Where should I look at? I had read at tuxmobil.org's articles that sound should work fine after installation but this doesn't seem to be correct for me.

b) XGA Resolution: When I was setting my computer up, I could configure a 1400 x 1050 resolution. I tested it and it worked ok. However, when I logged in to KDE I got a desktop that you could scroll on. (The max resolution is 1024 x 768. I have got an ATI Radeon video card. Do you recommend me downloading the drivers? I have read here that they are buggy and I'm afraid it gets worse :P

a. wait, so your sound works with headphones in but not from the speakers??

b. x and kde should support higher resolutions than 1024, someone correct me if i'm wrong. the scrolling is virtual desktop or viewport settings, try reconfiguring x with a higher resolution and see if it fixes the problem be sure not to turn on any virtual desktop settings.

keep posting

a) Yes... no sound from speakers... I'm pretty amazed about this O_o.

b) Yeah... I have tried to use the 1400 x 1050 resolution with no luck. I am bound to use a lower resolution. I looked carefully and observed that the so called 1400 x 1050 resolution in the initial setup was exactly the same as the XGA. I also checked what was bought and yeah... it's supposed to give a XGA resolution

c) I connected a USB Mouse and it is detected during the bootup . I configure it but can't use it.
