No distros work properly on Toshiba Satellite 4080XCDT

I don't know if I'm setting up the distros wrong or what, but I have tried to install Ubuntu, FC4 and Slackware (at different times) on my Toshiba Satellite 4080XCDT laptop. It will boot up, get past the boot loader, the cursor will show up (an "X" type shape") the will goes to a random color (black, white, red/yellow, or green) and freezes. I will again repeat, this is with 3 different distros. I have not read the "manual" on installing them, but I have installed Ubuntu and FC4 on a desktop (didn't try Slackware on the desktop.) However, if I have a mostly dead battery, force it into hibernation, then use AC power to turn it on, it will work until I restart or use "Lock Screen."Are there any suggestions (besides the manual, which I will do) or do I need to go back to Windows?

Thanks, I found reading the documentation does help I'm so good at Windows that I thought I knew what I was doing, but found that I didn't. I think I mostly got the physical and logical drives mixed up. Thanks again.

Could you post your solution so others might refer to it in the future?

All I really did was follow the original guide for installing Slackware 10.1 at http://abshost.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1103 . However, I did add a few things that were not included. For example, under Step 2, they forgot to add what should be bootable, which would be Linux (native) (that's what I put anyways) and to Write partition table, you should type "yes" instead of "y", and other minor things. That website I would highly recommend.
