no cd audio from external firewire CD-RW/DVD drive?

Machine info:
-SONY C1MW (picturebook), 860mhz crusoe processor, 256 ram, 30G HD, external cdrw/dvd drive.
-RedHat 9, completely up2date and apt distribution upgrade. Unmodified 2.4.20-20.9 redhat kernel. no acpi or apm.

Operator info:
Noob, but with two months of total RHLinux immersion. Several succesful kernel recompiles under belt, and not afraid. Has half a clue and RTFM's

Problem:
No audio from music CD's

Additional info:
-System event sounds work correctly. (not normally in use, just thought I'd check this out)
-DVD movies play audio and video correctly and in-sync using OGLE
-Mixer settings are correct, with everything set at half, and nothing is muted.
-CD PLAYER and GRIP apps appear to work correctly, but no sound. Yes, sound slider is not at "zero"

There are no audio jacks on the drive itself, or I'd run a cable from the drive to the machine. Not really a solution, though.

Maybe I'm missing something?

Ideas? anyone?

well, maybe its just a prob with it because its an external cd drive.
for me, my cd playing cdrom is the one where the cable from the soundcard is connected at. i figure that an external cdrom doesnt have a cable from the soundcard plugged into it, or any alternative ;\0
sorry for the weird explanation, the best i can do
plz correct me if im wrong!

chup-

thanks for posting a reply...

This thing is a real head-scratcher for me because audio *does* work when playing a DVD in this external drive....

I think maybe this has to do with linux mounting a data cd (DVD's fall in this category) differently than audio CD's????

idunno?
