Hi mrfandango,

I am assuming here that the laptop came with Linux installed on it. So if you have an OS installed on it and you try to copy something say from a cd do you get any error messages ? Does the data disappear when you reboot ?

Please give us some more info so that we can help you.

Is there any error messages?
How are you trying to "save" pictures and files. If you are trying to open an .exe file,presss Alt+F2 ,write "xterm" without the quotes,and then type these in that terminal:
Code:
 sudo yum install wine
or if unknown command error appears,
Code:
 sudo apt-get install wine
and enter the root password, (if any)

@SilverBack
Aspire one has no cd-drive

Links in signature to lots of Acer Aspire One info.

I don't understand your exact issue, can't save is not very descriptive.

Exactly what were you trying to save?
How were you trying to save it?
Where were you trying saving it too ?

more detail gets more useful responses
