Newbe seeking Help

Hello all,

Ok I am needing help. I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 with 120 GB Hard drive and 512 MB of memory. I have recently dual booted my laptop with Windows XP Pro and Linux Slackware 11. Both installed with NP for the most part. Here is where I need help; after installing Linux and booting to it I do not have sound in fact I get the following message:

Sound Server information message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device/dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Being a newbe and this being the first time I am attempting to use Linux I have no idea how I can go about fixing this. Is there someone out there that would please assist me in fixing this issue?

Ok second issue with the same laptop and Linux. After installing Linux it does not detect my PCMIA card slot at all. Is there a way to fix this so that I will be able to get online while in Linux using my Sprint Mobile Broadband Card PX-500?

Which installation did you do?

Bare.i huge26.s and etc.. Reason I am asking is if it was the huge26 or the test installs you will have to install more packages from extra or testing.

Ok I am using the Huge26.s kernal. So what additional PKGS do I need to install and how would I go about doing it now that I have installed Slackware 11?

First you try:

#lsmod (are the sound modules up?)

if yes, then try:

#alsamixer (now turn on the volumes)

#alsactl store (this will save the sound settings)

If nothing works, then try to recompile your kernel.
Use this guide:

On cd2 or on the dvd i think.

you will find the files you need in:

/extra/linux-2.6.17.13

install everything except the headers using the package tool and reboot.

That's the great thing about Linux/open-source community. Today I am able to help with something, but this just happens because yesterday there was people able to help me.
In the end, we all benefit from.

That's a cycle, that's community.
