I've just found Linux and i'm using the latest ubuntu on my laptop.
I have quite a few questions to ask, and i dare say quite a few more as time goes on.
I'm not a complete numpty with computer things nor am | someone who knows all the jargon.
I'm just getting used to the program and getting ready to use it solely and get rid of the "windoze" partition.
My first question is when using Mozilla in Ubuntu 11.4 I always have to use ctrl + to be able to read the page, every time the page changes, is there a way to set this once and for all?
Secondly how do i connect wirelessly to my router, i've seen the window that comes up asking for all sorts of codes etc but i don't fully understand it.
Thirdly how do i delete the windows partition to give the laptop entirely over to linux?
First question: As I can understand you want bigger font size when you say you have to do ctrl +. You can permanently do this by going to Edit Menu in Mozila. Edit | Preferences | Contents and there you will find the options to select font and size.
Second question: Please let us know the messages that you see so that we will be able to help you out.
Third question: Run the following commands and paste the output in this thread:
df -h
fdisk -l
ls -l /dev/
Also if you are already aware on which partition Windows is installed you can let us know.
"Secondly how do i connect wirelessly to my router, i've seen the window that comes up asking for all sorts of codes etc but i don't fully understand it."
Two parts to a wireless. One is a way to activate your laptop's wireless nic. Second is the way you connect to your router.
For the nic, three ways exist maybe. One is to have native support built into the distro. Second is a driver available from some place to load and install. Third is a a way to use windows drivers. Work on that order to get nic online then work on router connection method.
Not all users can migrate from Windows. Consider a backup plan just in case maybe.
To delete windows I use the installer application when I boot to the linux cd/dvd. It allows me to delete all partitions and install. I almost never use advanced, just use easy or fast install, can't see any reason for getting too technical.
I might suggest that if you have a new good system to consider a virtual machine until you get used to or happy with linux.
Thanks for the replies (even the bits i didn't understand).
I've solved the web page size issue. I've tried to delete the windoze partition but i get an error message saying " error unmounting volume, volume busy,"
I can't unmount the volume. I know it's the right volume to delete because of its size.
Will i need to create an installation disk and start again from scratch?
Also how do i get the command line up to execute commands?
I recommend NOT deleting the Windows partition. There are still times, thankfully getting rarer and rarer, when I find encounter websites that just don't work with Linux (and it's not an IE vs. Firefox thing; those site work properly with FF on Windows). If I get a new computer with Windows on it, I shrink the Windows partition down to the where it has about 5-10GB of free space, then dedicate the rest of the hard drive to Linux.
