NetGear MA 521 using ndiswrapper in Fedora Core 2

Hi,

I followed this tutorial

http://fedoranews.org/contributors/e_a_graham_jr/ndis/

I followed it step by step trying to get my Netgear 521 to work with Fedora Core 2 installed in my Acer Aspire 1355 LC (Kernel recompiled to 2.6.7)

Although when using redhat-network-config, I had to deviate from the tutorial since the interface wlan0 was available to select, there was no need to select a dummy eth0 device and rename all the file from keys-eth0 to keys-wlan0 etc, I dont suppose this is the problem.

The whole process goes well, and the card is recognised by the command ndiswrapper -l, but, at home I have an "ad-hoc" wireless network with my win xp desktop which doesnt have wep encryption, from the laptop using win xp the interface receives dhcp config and works fine, but when I try ifup wlan0 in fedora, the interface fails to receive dhcp config, I have recheked the wireless settings 1,000 times.

At Univ there is a "Managed" (AP based) wireless network with wep enabled, no luck their either.

I tried to assign an ip config to the interface and when i ping the ip i assigned it responds though none of the other hosts on the same lan respond.

Can anyone please give me an idea how to tackle this problem

Are there any utilities that I could use to scan networks etc?

Thanks

Alright, this is how I'd tackle it first.

I'm running a Linksys wireless G card with slack 10.0 and ndiswrapper.
After you bring up the card by loading the driver, try these commands in a console.

iwconfig wlan0 mode "ad-hoc"
iwconfig wlan0 essid "any"
dhcpclient wlan0

I *think* dhcpclient is the command used with fedora/redhat... In slack, the client is dhcpcd.
Give that a shot and see how it does ya

--Shade

edit --
if dhcpclient doesn't work, just type dhcp and hit tab a couple times -- it'll give the available commands.
Also, you want to do all of that as root.

Hi,

I have finally succeded in connecting at home (ad-hoc, no wep) but still no luck in the univ. network where I need to key in a wep key.
Any tips on this plz?

I have installed kismet but this card's chipset realtek8180 is not listed, is there a similar prog (packet sniffer, etc) that I can use to trace APs etc that supports this chipset?

Thanks

Hi,

I have found a solution to this, thanks to this post

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...72#post1047772

It was about authentication type being open instead of restricted
