this is a very broad question and if you ask 10 different people, you will get 10 different answers, all of wich could be great answers and valid laptop choices. That said, my rather broad answer is this: Im not a huge fan of dell as a company. but I have owned 2 laptops from them and both times I have been impressed and delighted to find how well they have worked with linux.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro 2040 running Slackware 11.0 (Dual boot with XP) without any problems.

I'd have thought Dell have to be the way to go at present. They're offering laptops with Linux installed, so you're not wasting money on the Windows tax. Even if you don't like Ubuntu you can wipe it and put on your laptop of choice.

I'm writing this from an HP510 which works fine. I think Linux of most flavours will work on most laptops these days. Even WiFi works well now. I wouldn't receommend HP though as they utterly refused to even get in a dialogue about refunding the Windows licence I've never used.
