need help bad for compaq laptop


I got a compaq laptop 2nd hand, its a presario 1200 somthing or another

Intel celeron 600
60 MB Ram
12+Gb Hdd
bootable cd
floppy
Windows ME (dont want this)

I want to in install Linux over windows me.
I downloaded debain Linux and burned it to cd
but when i try to run boot.bat its a dos program
and windows me does not have dos and i cant even run fdisk
I also tryed to make a boot disk with my XP system and
the laptop didnt reconize it .

Im not sure how to burn a bootable cd and what i would need
I could use boot floppys but im lost on making them also
I cant seem to find a good sight on how to get started

any help please

Debian has a lot of documentation available, and you can find a ton of Debian install guides if you google for it.

If you have burned the CD image to disk so you can view the contents (so it's not one big file on the CD) you should be able to boot from the CD and install that way. That's how most people do it. You may have to enable booting from CD in the BIOS setup of your computer first.

was a zip file and i unziped it.

Yeah, you need to download the ISO file. When you burn it, make sure to use the "burn image" or "burn ISO" option.
