My EEEpc 901 will not start up

Hi I have a EEEpc 901, with a linux xandrus OS. I have not really had any problems with it of late. But all of a sudden it will not start up. When I try to switch it on, it looks like it's going to start "It says starting system" Then it goes black with a flashing curser in the top left hand corner.
Can anyone help? I'm really worried as all my photos from 1 year of traveling sre on it.

Please help. Thanks

It may be a hardware problem. You can rule that out by getting a Linux distro that will boot off a USB drive and boot the machine with that. Mount the hard drive and see if you can access any of the data. If so, save off all your pictures and valueable data to the USB drive and then save them to another machine.

hi thanks for the quick reply. I've tried www.fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator and unebootin.sourceforge.net for a linux distro to put on to my usb but for some reason these sites don't seem to work. Does anyone know of any more? Also does it matter what linux distro that I use if all I want fo now is my computer to start so that I can access my photos? Thanks and sorry for all the questions. I'm a total beginer.

You can try this:

http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

I used it for the first time a few days ago and it works. It should get you far enough to move the content you wish to save off of the drive.

im suprised that no one has mentioned the f9 restore you turn on your asus and start pressing f9 and you get a screen to do a clean reboot but you get the option to keep yyour files that you already have which would save your images in my early days f9 was a godsend it maybe something as simple as you havent shut a programe down its well worth a try but as soon as you can wipe off xandros and try something like ubuntu netbook remix just remember to press the option to press the option to save your current files and a little tip i use all the time i use a 4gb sd card in the slot so whatever happens nothing gets lost and they are so cheap nowadays anyway good look and welcome to LQ

I've tried starting my netbook and pressing f9 but nothing is happening. I used to get an option to press f2 which then took me into a menu section but this no longer happens :-( All that I get is a white sceen for a few seconds which says starting computer then it quickly swithches to a flashing black screen. Is it time to call in an "expert"?
Thanks for the tip about using the SD card in future. Only wish that I had tought of that a bit earlier.

This happened to me.

Did you open the netbook up? Re-open it and see if your RAM stick is not in all the way. SCARED THE HELL OUTA ME!! Reseated rhe RAM and was good to go.

Best luck,
