msi wind

To whom it may concern,

I am thinking about buying an msi wind and I am trying to figure out which one is the best for my situation. I am leaning towards the U100, but I think that the best msi wind suited for my needs is the U120 because it has enough power to dual boot ubuntu and windows xp. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Which one has the best price and the best specifications for what I want to do?

irishbitte 04-07-2009 04:01 PM

Well. I guess the question is, what exactly are you trying to do? We're not mind readers you know! ;)

farslayer 04-07-2009 04:25 PM

There are eleven (11) Different models of the msi wind 100
There are three (3) Different models of the Msi Wind 120
http://www.msimobile.com/level2_prod...?id=3&page=all

Was there a couple specific models you were interested in ?

Could you post your requirements and the specs of the two models you are looking at ?

My recommendation would be to buy the pink one..
it will demonstrate that you are secure in your manhood, and will reduce the odds of it being stolen.
(there was a recent ask slashdot thread about netbooks.. a rather interesting and sometimes humerous read.)

Polanski 04-07-2009 05:50 PM

msi wind

I need it for writing, internet, music, movies, games like solitaire and the first mario, and shortcuts like gnome do. The models I am interested in are:

U100-411US
Product Number: 9S7-N01154-420 Starting at
$429.99
U100-420US
Product Number: 9S7-N01152-451 Starting at
$429.99
U100-451US
U100-641US

I would like it to be powerful enough to dual boot windows xp and ubuntu 8.10

Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

I do not need bluetooth, wireless n, and I do not need a large screen.

irishbitte 04-07-2009 06:18 PM

Ok, I took a quick look at the pink one!) and from what I can see looking at the spec on these machines, they are probably over specced for your requirements, but then, anything below those is probably not gonna run windows. Dare I say it, if it can run windows xp home, it can run ubuntu 8.10, and if it can run either, it can run both, seeing as it comes with a 160GB HDD.

The only thing I am worried about for you will be hardware compatibility with ubuntu and one of these machines. I know ubuntu very well, but I know they had some difficulty with power management on the Intel Atom processor.

Anyway, take a look at this link:http://wiki.msiwind.net/index.php/Ub...04_Hardy_Heron which is a wiki for people doing what you're doing. This particular wiki seems to give the impression that ubuntu is on top of things except maybe for the wireless, which you have said you don't want.

Thats my two cents anyway!

irishbitte 04-07-2009 06:20 PM

Oh yeah, I have tried the ubuntu netbook remix thing, my advice is to stay away! It's really not great at all at the moment.

Polanski 04-07-2009 09:32 PM

I do not want wireless n, but I do want wireless internet. Besides the problem with the atom processor, which of the choices that I listed is the cheapest one and has also been tested for what I want straight out of the box. Or does all of the choices that I listed work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer that the laptop have the 120gb instead of the 160gb.

Polanski 04-07-2009 09:54 PM

I have narrowed my choices down to two laptops. The msi wind U100-451US white with 160gb and the msi wind U100-420US Black 120gb. The white one is cheaper and has more hdd space. Why is the black one more expensive with less hdd space?

hurry_hui 04-07-2009 10:00 PM

In my place, there are some stores that allow buyers to try laptops by using Linux LiveCD and experiment with. This can save money and time sometimes. For me, I try my laptop with Knoppix CD. You can try with any LiveCD or USB you want instead.

The only spec difference I see is RAM speed and Hard drive size..
Black is sometimes carries a premium charge because of the color.. (no clue why)

System Memory

1GB DDR2 667MHz
vs.
1GB DDR2 533MHz

I see them both listed as $429.99 on the MSI website..

and $350.00 from tiger Direct.. for the 420

$309 for the 451 on sale

Polanski 04-12-2009 04:36 PM

To whom it may concern,

Does anyone know how to replace the hard drive on an msi wind U100-451US? Is there a video somewhere, maybe on youtube? If there is can you post the link. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Polanski 04-12-2009 05:11 PM

Also, does anyone know if ubuntu 8.10 will work on the msi wind? The link for the wubi installer only mentions ubuntu 8.04.1. What I would like to do is create a live usb key with ubuntu 8.10 and try it out. After I boot with the live usb key will I be able to run grub? What I would like to do ideally is explained in this video http://digg.com/d1oW07
The only difference would be that she uses a live cd. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. If this can be done I would not have to use the wubi installer.

if 8.04 will work then 8.10 should work fine as well.

When I install ubuntu 8.10 and go into the custom disk portion of the install what is the ideal way for me to partition the drive without removing windows xp? On this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MsiWind it says that I should just remove partition D: change it into a swap and root partition. The swap and root partition would be identified as / /root right? Or would it be the other way around? I am sorry I am a noob at this. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated and I do not want to lose the windows xp partition.

farslayer 04-13-2009 07:48 AM

the root partition is identified as '/'
/root would be the root users home directory, not the same thing as a '/' root partition.
a swap partition has no mount point identification..

Code:

it-lenny:~$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>  <type>  <options>      <dump>  <pass>
/dev/sda1      /              ext3    defaults,errors=remount-ro 0      1
/dev/sda5      none            swap    sw              0      0

Polanski 04-13-2009 07:18 PM

When I perform the custom partition of the disk how will I know where xp is? I do not want to erase it. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Polanski 04-13-2009 07:27 PM

Also, what version of ubuntu 8.10 should I download and install on the msi wind U100-451US, the 64 bit or the 32 bit? I think I should use the 32 bit but I am not sure.

farslayer 04-14-2009 08:06 AM

There should be an existing partition for Windows which will most likely fill the entire drive.

You should boot into windows and run a defrag of the OS.

You would then resize the windows partition, you may be able to do that with the Ubuntu installer, or you could use a live CD like gparted.

You would then install Ubuntu 8.10 into the free space you created by resizing the windows partition.

I would use the 32bit version of Ubuntu 8.10 your netbook may not support the 64 bit version. (some Atom CPU's do and some don't)

Although I would recommend a different desktop other than gnome for Ubuntu. Something like LXDE perhaps that is less resource intensive.

Polanski 04-14-2009 09:10 PM

What are the other choices besides LXDE? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe something that looks somewhat similar to gnome? Also how do I defrag the os in windows and how should I resize the windows partition with the ubuntu installer? I am sorry I am a noob at this. A step by step guide on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

farslayer 04-15-2009 07:54 PM

Theres lots of DE and/or window manager options

An updated tutorial that looked exactly like this would be fantastic:

http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/2006/06/...de-windows-xp/

Also I would like to manually partition the disk instead of erasing one or the other as shown in step 9 on the link I posted. When I manually partition the disk how does ubuntu show me where windows is installed? Will it be in red or green? Now people suggest that I need at least 10gb free space for ubuntu 8.10. What is the safest possible amount of free space that I need to dual boot ubuntu and windows xp and to install ubuntu 8.10? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.I am very sorry that I am a noob at this but I do not want to run the risk of losing windows xp because I do not have a recovery disk and I doubt windows will send me one. Again your help is greatly appreciated and I hope there is anyone in the linux community who is willing to explain this to me. Again I am a total noob and need help. Thank you.

Polanski 04-15-2009 09:38 PM

Also on this tutorial https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MsiWind they suggest that I just remove the unused D: partition and use it as swap and root partition, is that wise or will that remove windows xp?

Polanski 04-17-2009 01:48 PM

This tutorial is very clear http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installing and I might just use the first option to partition that says guided resize and use freed space, but will the swap space and root file be created automatically and I have a 160gb hdd, what would be the ideal size for windows xp home edition on the partition along with ubuntu? The ideal size for me on the partition would be for windows xp and ubuntu to function as well as possible. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Polanski 04-17-2009 04:35 PM

Has anyone tried to dual boot windows xp and sabayon 4.0 lite mce on on the msi wind? I understand that I would have to manually partition the hdd.

farslayer 04-19-2009 10:36 PM

Your best bet is to backup important data and make sure you have restore disks for Windows, and just go for it.. if it goes bad, you can reinstall windows and Linux.

If you never try you'll never succeed. Many people are dual or multi booting their netbooks without issues.

Polanski 04-24-2009 05:34 PM

Has anyone dual boot ubuntu 9.04 and windows xp on msi wind U100? Does the guiding partitioning do the job well for the dual boot? Will it leave enough space for windows xp on the drive?

irishbitte 04-26-2009 04:20 AM

Please take advice given from farslayer:

I am now trying to install opensuse from ubuntu with unetbootin. I ran unetbootin with the ./ command and it installed opensuse onto / on the harddrive. I already downloaded the opensusedvd.iso and that is what I used with unetbootin to install it onto the portion of the hard drive that is labeled /. I would like to install opensuse this way and wiping out the ubuntu installation that is on the hard drive. After I reboot and try to run unetbootin at the grub boot loader it says error 13: unsupported format or something like that and then it says press any key to continue. It takes me back to the grub boot loader. What should I do to fix this problem? What am I missing? I have the other option which is labeled linux and I tell it to install from hard disk, but I get stuck at the point where it says source directory. What is the source directory? I installed ubuntu the default way and used the whole hard drive to install it onto. I believe unetbootin is installed on the /dev/sda1 section of the hard drive. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

irishbitte 05-01-2009 04:16 PM

Obviously, / is the root of the system, so it wasn't a great idea to do what you did.

Your only option is to reinstall ubuntu, then re-install opensuse using a different mount point.

If you no longer want ubuntu on your machine, install opensuse using the dvd itself, without unetbootin.

Polanski 05-01-2009 04:24 PM

I do not have a cd drive or an external cd drive. I cannot install it with unetbootin from the root system? Unetbootin did not allow me to choose any other mount point.

irishbitte 05-01-2009 08:16 PM

unetbootin is for installing to a usb drive. you have to decide the correct drive! That will never be your own primary hard disk.

irishbitte 05-01-2009 08:20 PM

Please take a look at this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...on-usb-723017/, there is a post regarding unetbootin for your situation. You install ubuntu to a usb disk, then use the usb disk to install ubuntu.
