MPlayer + other video players do not work, HP DV7-1451NR, Radeon HD3200, Lucid

I recently upgraded to resolve a problem with Wireless. The new kernel does wireless fine, but along the way my video playback was destroyed.

Prior to upgrading video looked great. Now it's a dog's breakfast. The longer it goes, the muddier the output gets, and the audio is filled with pops and cracks.

I've tried to do research, and it seems there is a lot of concern about FGLRX, which is apparently a proprietary driver from ATI, but how it fits into Catalyst, I do not know. I tried downloading and installing the Catalyst 10.8 package from ATI, but it didn't seem to change anything. The current Catalyst version is 11.6.

It's possible that ATI has abandoned lower graphics sets, including the HD3200, but I can't get that confirmed.

System info:
Athlon X2 CPU, 2.2 gHz, 4 gig memory, 2 1/2 terabyte hard drives, Lucid Lynx 10.04 32-bit.

I don't mind trying suggestions out, and I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. I don't know what to try next.

Thanks,
Toad

I don't know about using the catalyst drivers from ATI - I can't stand Ubuntu and try to spend as little time in it as possible. That said, when I'm put into such a position, I install xorg-driver-fglrx, then run
Code:

sudo aticonfig --initial -f

fglrx and catalyst are the same thing, just different names.

You can't get it confirmed because it's not true about the HD3200. It is still supported.

If you are having problems, please show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. A screenshot of this 'muddier' video output might help, too.

Tried: sudo aticonfig --initial -f but it did not resolve the problem.

Looking for a snapshot program now, but by "muddier", I mean pixelized. Also, I'm sure everyone knows the modern movie players store frames as changes from the previous frame. This is what I mean by muddier - there is fading between the frames. If I can capture a still, I will post it.

Appreciate any advice.

I tried the instructions at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

Now my system locks up in the boot process. CTL-ALT-DEL will restart boot, but won't give me enough time to read the messages.

Tomorrow I guess I'll try reloading ... again. Oh well ...

Toadbrooks 07-24-2011 11:37 AM

Reloaded 10.04, set restricted and multiverse, set Medibuntu, updated, installed ATI video driver, rebooted, updated, started totem, downloaded codecs, verified fglrx-modaliases and jockey-gtk are installed, installed or verified faac, faad, amr, w32codecs, non-free-codecs, and ubuntu-restricted extras.

Rebooted again, checked Synaptic to insure nothing remains to be loaded, launched movie (Devil's Own.VOB), using totem and SMplayer, and still the audio has loud pops and digital artifacts flicker on the screen. The artifacts seem to get worse as the movie continues. It's never completely unwatchable - just very annoying.

If anyone has a suggestion, I could use some help. Thanks!

adamk75 07-24-2011 12:21 PM

Well you have now tried this with the open source 'radeon' driver and the proprietary 'fglrx' driver. The issue happens with both, which is certainly an indication that the problem lies elsewhere, perhaps with the video players you are trying. Maybe try a different video player, such as vlc.

Is there any reason why you are sticking with Ubuntu 10.04? It's possible that this is a bug that has been fixed in newer versions.

And, finally, please use [code][/code] tags around things like Xorg log files.

I loaded 10.04 a year ago (of course.) At the time, the movie players worked fine. I used SMplayer mostly, but also had then and still have VLC which shows the same response. BUT my network didn't work, as I have the Atheros 5001 Wifi card. Anyway, I was fiddling with different downloads trying to get the Wifi to work, got it, but then the movie players started crapping out.

Since they work (more or less) I was assuming the problem was codecs. I was hoping someone would say, "have you tried BozoCodec?" or something like that.

As for sticking with 10.04, I can, of course, reset things to look like I want them to, but Ubuntu changes everything anytime they want to, and frankly I don't like it. I will not use Unity, and I don't appreciate having the buttons wander around because someone thinks the Mac layout is better than the PC. (Maybe it is, but making MY choice for me because Ubuntu thinks it is better is the way MICROSOFT treats people.)

When I had Hardy, things worked. I didn't upgrade until 10.04 came out. I'm surprised at how volatile an LTS release is. I just want something that will remain stable for 3 years of the LTS. I want to use my computer, not upgrade it and reset the look and feel to my preferences every week.

So, unless someone has a reason why I should put up with 11.04, and then have to keep on upgrading until the next LTS, I'm sticking with the current LTS. Maybe it's time I went to Debian or even Mint. (Although I can't figure on how Mint would do any better since it's based on Ubuntu.) Anyone have any advice?

I guess I'm really surprised that it did work fine, and now it won't and there's not a clue as to why. The movies work fine on my PC, although I detest M$ and hate having to keep a PC around just to play movies. Oh well ...

Thanks for your response. I think I'll have to look at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide and see if I can work out any of the other solutions they offer. Any reason to believe the Xorg stuff might work?

adamk75 07-25-2011 04:21 AM

Given the fact that two separate video drivers show this problem, I don't see any reason think that changing anything related to Xorg will impact anything.

Appreciate the advice. Any way to tell which codecs I have (or which are actually being used?) Like I said, these videos run fine on a much less powerful PC. There's got to be a reason and some way to tell what it is.

adamk75 07-25-2011 04:59 PM

Well, if you play a video from a terminal in mplayer, it will tell you what codecs it's using. Like so:

Code:

==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffmpeg1] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-1)
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 192.0 kbit/13.61% (ratio: 24000->176400)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)
==========================================================================

mplayer is using ffmpeg's libavcodec library to decode the MPEG-1 video, and mp3lib to decode the mp3 audio.

I've tried lots of movies, all of which looked fine before. It's got to be something in the codec or the way it's loading, or chosing which codec to use. Is there any way to list available codecs or force it to use them so I can see if any of them are better?

Thanks,

adamk75 07-26-2011 06:53 AM

Code:

Selected video codec: [ffmpeg2] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-2)
<snip>
Opening audio decoder: [liba52] AC3 decoding with liba52

The video has an mpeg2 video track and an ac3 audio track. Bear in mind that in many cases there may only be one or two libraries to support video/audio decoding for specific codecs, and the various programs available for video playback typically just link to those libraries. ffmpeg, for example, is a very common program/library that many video players use.

I understand that ffmpeg2 is supposed to be one of the best codecs. Is there any way to force a player to select a different one, so I can test them and see if a different one will work? Also, why does SMPlayer output look and sound better than MPlayer, since SMPlayer is a front end on MPlayer? I'm trying to figure out what my next step is in troubleshooting. Like I said, it used to be flawless - then an upgrade and it's been downhill ever since. Whatever it was that changed, there ought to be a way to put it back.

Thanks,

I just don't know.
