Mouse pad on laptop not working AFTER logging in

The mousepad on my HP Pavilion laptop is not working properly (it did work before a system crash).
Once I log in, the entire mouse pad acts as 'UP/DOWN', but not as a mouse. But this is only after I log in.
At the login banner for Fedora 11, it works perfectly. So I thought, something in your config is corrupt. I created a new account on the laptop, same thing.
I searched thru the forum but did not find a similar issue (many threads on the mouse pad not working at all, but mine does work fine at the login banner).
Connecting an external mouse works ok.

Thoughts ?

It might be related to a corrupted xorg.conf file

The xorg.conf file located in /etc/X11/ on fedora controls the mouse, the screen resolution and the keyboard I believe. In theory, you could have someone write you a script to be run from the console that would first delete your current xorg.conf file and then make a new one for you. You should post your computers exact model name for us to know exactly what to set it to.

P.S. Such a script would need to be run as root because only root can edit the xorg.conf file.
