modem won't detect dial tone

I have a hp pavillion 7010us with a conexant modem built into it and Suse 9.1. My problem is getting the modem to either recognized a dial tone or send out a signal, I'm not sure which. When I tell it to wait for a dial tone, the log says that it could find a dial tone. When I don't have it wait for a dial tone, it something about the recipiant not responding (I can't remember the exact log from memory.) The modem works fine in windows xp (I dual boot) with the same number. I'm pretty sure the settings are the same, basically my ip and dns is defined by the server on Earthlink (my provider.) I've tried downloading new drivers for the modem, but I keep getting an error while installing them with no explanation. I'm just wondering if I need a certian setting or if my drivers are incorrect or what. Oh, I should mention that suse does recognize the modem. Any thoughts?

Aren't Winmodems a pain?

zippy;
Every lappie I've put Linux on has had this problem. Not that I'm so experienced, but it keeps happening. I just go to http://linmodems.org/ and follow the advice there. I believe your modem can be made to work. My wife's Compaq r3120us has a Conexant modem and we got it working under SuSE 9.2. You can do this. It's a little involved, but you got this far, you can finish it.
