Mobile 3d solutions and their drivers

Lately I've been looking into alot of laptops featuring the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 Pro with 128 vram. I'm wondering if this will even working under linux to any respectable degree (playing games etc). I've also noticed that ATI doesn't have the drivers for their mobility line on their webpage and instead relies on laptop maker to provide the drivers. How many makers actually put decent linux drivers on their site? I don't plan on duel booting so anything that doesn't work well under linux it's a waste of money for me.

In the other camp, how is nvidia with their mobile linux drivers? Whose drivers are better, nvidia or ati?
