Message on dell mini Setting the system clock 1383 FSCK 1.40. 8 (13-Mar-2008)

Hi all,I have never been on this site till today and just wondering if anyone can give me advice.
My daughter has a Dell Mini netbook running Ubunto and she has phoned me to say that when she switches it on it won't get past the following message:

Setting the system clock 1383 FSCK 1.40. 8 (13-Mar-2008)
init:gdm main process (4005) terminated with status 127/
etc/rc2.d/S98Usplash: 98: clear: Permission denied

My daughter is in another part of the country to me and she has the netbook with her -she is pretty useless when it comes to computers (as am I )but I just wondered if this was something we could fix ourselves or would we need to take it for repair?
Thanks
