Mandrake on laptop!
 

Well I wrote a similar topic some days ago.

I have an Acer Travelmate 240 and I wanted to install Mandrake 9.0; I boot from CD, I get the first graphical interface, I press <ENTER> to begin the installation but the PC freezes with black screen. So someone of you suggested me to get a newer Mandrake release so I got Mandrake 9.2. Nothing changed, the same story. I insert the first/second (no matter) disc I get the interface and when I press <ENTER> I simply get the PC freezed.

Now I want to know: does someone else got the same problem? Is there any solution? Or is Linux so strange?

Try Install in text mode. If this does not work, check that your disks have the right data on them. If you used windows media to download the iso then your going to have problems. download the iso using a download manager in a cable box, the copy to disk. Dont use wireless (laptop), as the disk is going to have plenty of errors. If this does not work try formating the hard-drive then installing. If all this fails check for damaged sectors of the drive.

Yea, it sounds hardware based... Text mode is your best bet. Then you can find the right settings for XF86Config that will play nice with your hardware.... Try some other distros too if your not completely set on Drake... Could also be a Mandrake thing.

Well I don't know what my friend (who downloaded isos for me) used to download 'em but I assume he used some Peer-to-Peer software; anyway the isos are correctly burned on the CD's so I'm sure the images are right. No wireless and text mode fails when it says "Ok booting Linux", it simply freezes up. Another friend of mine with an Acer Travelmate has the same problem.

Now I have installed Fedora 1 and everything seems fine.

What processor does your laptop have? I have a similar problem with all recent Mandrake releases on an AMD Duron based machine... Text mode gives more informative messages, but no solution as far as 3 months of searching has found... :confused:

I GOT IT!

Simply I did this: when the graphic interface starts, I press F1. I then press F2 and select one of the alternative kernel by giving the command "alt0" or "alt1" or "alt2"; for now I only tried "alt1" but I think it'll work with other kernels.

Hi. I have the same problem with Mandrake 9.2. But what happened is that I managed to install it sucessfully by chosing "alt1", but then when it was installed and I booted for first time - it froze again. Well, I cannot even boot it now, because I have nowhere, where I can select "alt1" again. What did you do to make it work?

Well I must say that for now I have only tried the installation I never booted up. But I think you have to play with the boot options...

Yes, but the LILO bootloader does not give me any choice to play with the boot options. What should I do?
