Mandrake 9.1 on inspiron 500m

Hi;

Xfree86 does not work on my inspiron 500m.

Here is my configuration:
Mandrake 9.1; 512 MB of ram, monitor 1400x1024, Graphic controller 855GM extreme
graphics (64mb).
I looked at www.linux-on-laptops.com, but the 500m is not referenced.
I also installed the drivers from the intel site for 855GM Extreme
Graphic controller ... same results.
help !

how about expanding a little more in "does not work"? That's not exactly informative.

Hello everyone;

ok here it goes: I have successfully installed mkd 9.1 on my inspiron 500m.
But I can not start X11: when I do "startx", Xfree goes down.
I have joined somme parts of the logs of xfree86 (/var/log/XFree86.0) .

But I have found some bad news on the Dell forum: The problem may come from the BIOS, not from linux / Xfree86.

The Intel 855GM uses dynamically allocated Video Memory, But the BIOS of my 500m indicates that ONLY 832kb is available for use (you will see that in the log file).
Moreover, I checked the Intel driver readme, and it seams that this is really the problem (see the BIOS section at the url: http://support.intel.com/support/gra...x/graphics.htm).

If this is really the problem, I have to upgrade the BIOS ?

regards

Here is my /var/log/XFree86.0 log file ...

I applied the latest bios (A05)... no change [Bouhhhh !!!]

I hope some day, Dell will deliver a patched BIOS that will permit the configuration of the graphic memory size ...
For now, I do not recommend the 500m laptob if linux is required. very disappointing ...

That is why I got the 600M with the Vid card with dedicated video memory. So far it works great with Knoppix. I havn't installed any other flavor of linux on this laptop since intel still hasn't release linux drivers for the wireless card. As soon as that happens linux will be loaded on this baby.

Go with the Vesa

I've had the same problem with my Dell inspiron laptop. It has a Rage ATI mobility card with it that doesn't want to work with X (Even though there is a driver supplied with RedHat 8.

If you use the standard generic VESA driver, X should start.

Not perfect, but its a starting point.

I've heard that Mandrake 9.1 has better support for ATI Mobility Cards than both Redhat 8 and 9.

Hello;

Concerning VESA driver on my inspiron 500m (Extreme graphic), I tried ... I only get a 640x480 resolution with twm; and kde does not work.

There is another mailing list on DellTalk about my inspiron 500m problem ... and they say we have to wait for a Dell patch.

For anyone concerned by this problem, you can refer to: http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportf...&message.id=97

regards;
Pierre.

Has anyone tried to update the DRM or AGP (with http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/intel-...gp-2.4.20.diff for instance ?).

Quoted from : http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html

It appears that some 855GM-based laptops only pre-allocate 1MB of video memory, and don't provide any BIOS configuration options for increasing this. Although the XFree86 driver will allocate more (if the correct agpgart kernel support is present), the mechanism used to inform the video BIOS of the additional allocation doesn't seem to be implemented on these laptops. This results in the video BIOS refusing to program video modes that require more than 1MB (actually 832KB).

I don't know of any workaround for this short of contacting your laptop vendor to see if they can provide a video BIOS that either allows more video memory to be pre-allocated, or implements the mechanism that the XFree86 driver uses for notifying its additional allocations. Most current 852GM/855GM laptops that don't allow the user to change the default amount of pre-allocated video memory are probably affected by this. From some discussions on the XFree86 devel list, it appears that Intel will be making available to vendors a video BIOS update that implements the notification mechanism that the driver uses. So, be patient, and look for a video BIOS update from your laptop vendor if you're being bitten by this problem.

Inspiron 500m resolution BIOS

there is a solution to the resolution problem

http://www.mail-archive.com/devel%40.../msg02247.html

a utility that adjusts how much memory is used for video.
this is a very smalla C program userland. Try running it.

Ok, it works fine with a 1024x768 resolution.
(but it does not work in 1400x1024)

Thank you;
Pierre.
