Mandrake 9.1 on an Inspiron 5000 (Dell)

I am running Mandrake 9.1/Win 98 on an Inspiron 5000 Laptop and cannot seem to get the sound to work. I have looked around and I know that there are solutions, but all of the information out there seems to apply to the 7.0 version and some of the files are in different places.
I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting the sound to work.

Thanks,
James

Rule number one for laptops.

Laptop+Linux+No Sound=ACPI

You'll have to get a fresh copy of the latest kernel from kernel.org, apply the ACPI patches available in sourceforge file repositories. Then configure and recompile the kernel with all ACPI settings and DELL and TOSHIBA laptop support enabled.

This should make the sound work.

If you dont want to do this. Buy, or do an Network install of Suse 8.2, ACPI is enabled by default in Suse, making it much more suitable for laptops.

keyboard failure

I'm running (or rather trying to) Mandrake 9.1 on a Dell Inspiron 5000. Oddly, unlike the post above, my sound works just fine, the distro installed very nicely but when I boot into KDE I lose my keyboard after a very short while. It will work for a bit but then simply fails, I type and nothing happens. I'm stumped.

Plus, I notice that the laptop seems to run very hot with linux, hotter than I remember with Windoze.

All assistance and/or ideas appreciated.

Thanks
