mandrake 9.1 LCD brightness adjusting on laptop??

hi all. a newbie from Nairobi.

Way to go linux!!!!!!!

but...

i recently installed mandrake 9.1 on a laptop but the LCD brightness does not seem to work. any help??? adjusting brightness is normally with the Fn + F1/F2 combo keys but this only works on windows. Sometimes the screen gets so bright that the only way to change it is by returning to win as i multiboot madrake, winxp and win2k. the laptop model is a hp compaq nx9005.
Tried installing hotkeys but nothing worked. I'm new to linux and i tried it on the mandrake control centre as i haven't yet discovered how to install software via the shell.

Odd, the screen buttons always worked fine on the compaq's I've installed suse on... maybe Mandrakes just a little bit crappy at acpi buttons.

Nx9005 and screen brightness

Hi,
I've got a nx9005 too.
My screen brightness control keys work since I activated ACPI.
Now I use linux 2.6.6 kernel and acpi works fine on my nx9005 without applying kernel patches.
If you use older kernels probably you need to upgrade your kernel or patch it (http://acpi.sourceforge.net/).
This two special keys work even without hotkeys.

You can find useful information on linux & nx9005 at

I enabled ACPI in Mandrake 10 (kernel 2.6.3) and I can control lcd brightness via the hotkeys now. No need to patch or upgrade kernels.
