Mac PPC clamshell and Kubuntu 6.06

When I tried to boot Kubuntu 6.06 off the live cd on a friend's 367mhz PPC laptop (Clamshell) Mac running OSX 10.4, I got a boot prompt screen and then everything seemed to load ok and then I wound up with a blank empty black screen.
I'm wondering if this is a video issue (unsupported card). The video card is a ATY rage m3 and the resolution is fixed at 800x600.
If this is the case, is it possible to boot from a previous version of Kubuntu..? Or should I just go with another distro..?
Thanks,
Michel
