Question Loss of music sound with kubuntu 10.04

I have just completed a clean install of kubuntu 10.04 (netbook version) from kubuntu 9.10. The upgraded distro is a lot smoother than 9.10 but i have not been able to configure the sound for music/video players. Vlc is my preferred player, sound works when testing using system multimedia utility and alerts work just music/video sound is not heard.
