Thanks Frank for the hint. I tried the ALSA Mixer Wizard but no luck there, after all, I don't know to what card my mic is attached/linked.
I'm going to take a few days for reading that manual slowly.

I did make a pupsave file as you said but now I've a 'Kernel Panic' message right before the os starts & halts. I put the file in a partition in a hdd that I connected to the notebook.
I'm planning to check that file, delete it & see what changes in the starting process. If it doesn't show up again I'm going to put a new pupsave file within the first partition instead of the last as I did the first time.
Will post anything new or relevant around this.

Go to menu-System-Pupscan interface information and scroll through pci devices. This is what it gave for my sound card:

ThTthen run the Alsa Sound Wizard again and chose the right card-you need to use the tab key to select the buttons in the wizard.

I think it's the default for me. I say so because I don't hear or perceive any difference between my system before or after running the wizard.

I've entered in the configuration window of ALSA for tweaking the mic settings &, after trying all the possibilities offered, the mic still won't perceive anything. BTW, no change in the internal speakers, either.

Addendum: I opened Pmusic, from which selected Tools tab & clicked on Alsa Mixer. Now, within alsamixer pressed F5 to see all the 'tweakable' things there. Using the right-arrow moved to the end & see also (from left to right) [Mic Jack] [S/PDIF] [S/PDIF D] [Capture] [Input So] [Mux]. For the 1st it appears as {Mic In} is selected by default. The 2nd has a box showing MM in it (no idea what that means).
The 3rd is even stranger, seems to have 00 in a green background; also, no idea...
The 4th & 6th I can change the level/'volume' with the usual arrows. The 5th says {Mic} which I can change to {Front Mi} (think the last word should be 'Mic' but for some reason it doesn't show up no matter how much I widen/stretch the window).
Is there something that I'm jumping/passing by?

When you ran the Wizard did you scan for sound cards and select the Intel? Did you allow it to play a sound to test it? Namely the puppy woof woof ?

If you did not do this then yes you did miss something, passed it by. This should not be so hard .

Which kernel are you running? If you don't know type uname -a in the terminal

I selected that one (which is the 1st to appear, & this suggests me it's the default; btw, if this one isn't the selected one I've no audio). I did try all the others with all the options available, too.
I let all tried configs to play the 'woof' sound but the puppy was silent unless the intel one was selected.
I'm running: Linux puppypc 2.6.33.2 #1 SMP - i686 GNU/Linux.

PS. In relation to the "kernel panic" message, what's the contents of the following files: 1)pupsave... & 2) SFS file? Where the swap file gets in?

Well it sounds like your sound card is installed so either you do not have the settings correct on the sound controller or maybe it's gremlins. It is very difficult to diagnose machines without being there. There are generally 2 different settings as far as rear and front , of course with a laptop there is only one but try the others. Does the headphone jack work?
Not sure what you are asking about the pupsave, The 2fs stands for ext2 squash file. That is the pupsave file.

There is the version of 431 Retro i think has the best shot of working on your machine:

You are using way too new of a kernel for that old laptop. I do not understand why people insist on using a new kernel on and old machine. Let me put it this way, I have 2 laptops built in 2005 , the only puppy that has the correct drivers for them that I have found is 431-k2.6.25.16 . Lupo was useless on them, completely useless.

Thanks, Frank, for responding! I've never before though of it in that way (old kernel for old equipment). Think it's a very good advice even though I like very much the ways of this 511 puppy, like it gets itself connected to the web either by lan or wifi without my intervention, almost.
Have to admit that if I frugally install it or another one for that matter, it would behave even better. Now I'm that process but had to stop because of lack of info on how to proceed. Searched for an old site/page (Lin'N'WinNewbieProject) that served me well in the past but no search engine can find anything about it.
Do you happen to know about that approach & what happened to the page?
