Hmmm, I see that. What about all the related and closely numbered presarios. The 1621 and 1675 (1625 link is also broken) links both work, and should give a general idea of how it will go with which distro. That is a fairly old laptop, so it should work fairly well, especially with Redhat 9.0. The 1675 had no problems. With 32 Meg Ram, you will probably want to opt for lighter X session like FluxBox.
So your suggestion is to install red hat 6.1 (as described in 1621 how to) or maybe something like red hat 9 kai change x with fluxbox? If yes how do i do that?from where can i download the fluxbox?is it in *.rpm type?
I would recommend Redhat 9, it should be detected very well, and like the 1675, minor tweaks to get it working. With 32 Meg, you can probably run Gnome (slowly)...you know, the best thing to start off with is a Knoppix live CD. It already used Fluxbox, has great hardware detection, and if you like it, it can be installed on your hard drive. It might be more than you want to get fluxbox working with Redhat. Given that the entire knoppix distro fits on one CD, that gives you a lot of room. Also, absolutely nothing to install, just boot up.
" 20 MB of RAM for text mode, at least 96 MB for graphics mode with KDE (at least 128 MB of RAM is recommended to use the various office products) " (I only have 32 mb ram)
How can i run a graphical mode?R there any lighter graphical modes in the cd image from knopix ? Should i use instead fluxbox?
Hmmm, maybe VectorLinux. It is designed to give optimium performance on older machines. I didn't think knoppix required so much memory.
System Requirements:
VL is designed to run well even on older hardware. To run VL,
you'll need at least a 386 processor and 16MB RAM. A full install
of VL requires 350MB hard drive space.
# Easy on your system resources, should run fine with a minimum of 32mb of ram
DESKTOP FEATURES
# XFCE, Fluxbox and ICEwm window managers with antialias font support. More available on the deluxe CD.
Instructions are available at their main site. http://www.vectorlinux.com/index.php?menu=1
It has the 3 most common and lightest window managers to choose from, as listed above.
