anything over 500 Mghz cpu and 256 mg ram and 10 + gigs hdd space.
Now if you want to due some stuff concider a dual / quad core, 250 + gigs hdd space, Nvidia / ATI graphics 64 meg +. NOw wireless has been an issue in the past, but is getting better pay attention to the chip set and drivers. Artheros wireless tend to work well on Ubuntu from experiance.
If you want to save some bucks get a netbook for everyday - college type stuff. No serevers on it though.
I have an Everex Stepnote. I have found through some pain that I can't get Ubuntu to configure my screen correctly. Mepis, as well as some other distros do work though without any difficulty. If Ubuntu doesn't immediately work, I would try some alternatives. Mepis works well for me.

I am not going to say sony is the way to go, but it does run ubuntu 9.04. The artheros drives for wireless worked out of the box. also the rtl8187 drives work out of the box. That said you may have to still do some minor configuring of the wireless.
The only issue I do have with the vaio is the media card reader that is built in. I never really investigated the issue, was not a stopper for me, it might for. Everything else did work out of the box.

My vaio "media" slot doesn't work either. It has some DRM c..p hardware associated with it, so I just ignore it. External card reader works fine, if you plug in the card before you plug in the USB connector.
