Linux (Mandrake) on HP omnibook 600C: problem installing from the scsi cdrom
Hello, guys!
Well, here it goes...
I have been using linux for about a year now (mostly Mandrake as it's, they say, the easiest to configure).
Here in Russia it's hard to convince people to give linux a try because unlicenced windows is sold at every corner for max. $3. Nevertheless, I have managed to convince one of my friends to try to install mandrake on his old HP Omnibook 600C. (His decision was actually triggered by 2 things, I think: first, he was impressed by mandrake move I showed him, second, windows 2000 is too heavy for the laptop and NT does not support USB or something). He says the laptop cannot be booted from the cdrom (scsi) so I gave him the installation CDs of Mandrake 10 and created a boot floppy as instructed by readme on the first installation cd. He says the floppy booted okay, the system recognized the cdrom (matsushita something) but said that there was no driver for it on the floppy and asked for another floppy with the driver or alternatively asked to specify parameters. The questions are:
1) What driver shall he use or, better, where to get a floppy image with the driver (or what parameters shall he specify)?
2) Is it at all possible to install from the hard disk (with installation cds copied to it, like it's possible with windows 98)?
3) And actually, is there any sense in installing Mandrake 10 on such an old laptop or shall he probably use another/older distro?
I will appreciate your help. Actually, when I was trying to install nvidia drivers for the first time on my home pc, it was linuxquestions.org, where I found a solution for my problem (thanks, Wolven!).
And again, if I manage to install linux on my friend's laptop, there will be one more linux user in the world!
